The top portion of the ranch was occupied by a family built reservoir and Barley and Hay fields.
The Allens had horses and mules and they need to be fed. Hay was used for animal feed and barley would also be used to supplement the animals diet. It could also be used in stews and soups and cereals or sold to distillers to make whiskey or beer. About 60 acres above Altadena drive and stretching all the way to Allen in present day were dedicated to growing Barley and Hay.
